Oral Surgery
Oral surgery may be necessary for a variety of dental and oral issues. It is typically recommended when a non-surgical treatment is not effective in addressing the problem. Depending on the need, it may be performed under either local or general anesthesia.
Some common reasons why oral surgery may be needed include:
- Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth are sometimes impacted, meaning they are unable to emerge properly from the gum line. This can lead to pain, infection, and damage to surrounding teeth. Oral surgery is often necessary to remove impacted wisdom teeth.
- Jaw surgery: Jaw surgery may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including correcting misaligned jaws, repairing jaw damage caused by trauma or disease, and treating sleep apnea.
- Biopsies: Oral surgery may be necessary to remove tissue for biopsy to determine the presence of oral cancer or other abnormalities.
- TMJ disorder: Temporomandibular joint disorder can cause jaw pain, headaches, and other symptoms. In some cases, oral surgery may be recommended to treat the underlying cause of the disorder.
- Gum surgery: Gum surgery may be recommended for patients with advanced periodontal disease, to remove diseased tissue and promote gum and bone regrowth.
