Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a popular treatment that we see used to restore damaged or decayed teeth. Crowns cover or "cap" the entire tooth, protecting it from further damage and restoring its strength and function. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials.
There are several reasons why our team may recommend a crown. Crowns can be used to repair teeth that are cracked, chipped, or broken, as well as teeth that have large fillings or significant decay. Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of misshapen or discolored teeth.
When getting a crown here at Dr. Douglas F. Geiger, DMD, the process typically involves two appointments. At the first appointment, we will prepare the tooth by removing any damaged or decayed tissue and shaping it to fit the crown. We will then take impressions of the tooth to create a custom-made crown that fits perfectly. A temporary crown will be placed on the tooth while the permanent crown is being made. At the second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed and the permanent crown will be cemented into place.
After a dental crown is placed, it is important to take good care of it to ensure that it lasts as long as possible. This includes practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding hard or sticky foods, and wearing a mouthguard if you grind your teeth. With proper care, a dental crown can last for many years, restoring the health, function, and appearance of your smile. Contact our team today to schedule your appointment!
